Spinghar named to head electoral reforms panel
KABUL (Pajhwok): The unity government has appointed Jandad Spinghar as head of the newly-created Electoral Reforms Commission, a source said on Wednesday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah had agreed on the appointment of Spinghar, a former head of the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA).
Spinghar, who currently heads the Election Watch Organization of Afghanistan (EWA) and Afghanistan Civil Society Election Network (ACSEN), would be officially introduced as the electoral commission head in the near future, the source said.
He would replace lawmaker Shukria Barakzai, who was appointed by the president as the electoral reforms commission head, but had to sack her in the face of strong opposition to her appointment by the CEO office.
Electoral reforms are one of the major parts of the unity national government deal between the president and the CEO.
