Bid to smuggle heroin, minerals to Tajikistan foiled
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Police on Sunday arrested two persons trying to smuggle precious stones and heroine concealed in 143 wooden boxes in the Surkhrud district of eastern Nangrahar province, the provincial police said.
Col. Fazal Ahmed Sherzad told Pajhwok Afghan News the pair wanted to smuggle the boxes to Tajikistan.
The police chief did not know exact value of the stones and drugs, but said police had opened their investigation to reach original culprits.
Police had arrested 216 smugglers and seized 2070 kg of opium and 2884 kg of hashish in Nangrahar last year.
Sanaullah, a resident, said poppy was grown as well as processed into drugs in Nangarhar. Therefore, he said, police should thoroughly examine every vehicle on main roads to prevent smuggling of drugs from Jalalabad to other areas.
