EWA Viewpoint on Delay in Beginning the Electoral Reform Process
Press Release Tuesday 2015.05.12 The deadlock in 2014 presidential elections of Afghanistan has further increased the need for binding reform in the country’s electoral system.
Establishment of the government of national unity, especially its commitments on forming the electoral reform commission has raised demands for electoral reform among the people, civil society institutions and even among friend and donor countries.
But as seen by the passage of more than eight months, the government of national unity is yet to take any practical steps for fulfilling the pledges.
With regard to above facts and the need to reform in respective organs, EWA views the delay of great concerns, considering the international community’s recent decision to cut its financial support to Afghan elections as serious alarm that’s why EWA asks for acceleration of the process.
More delay will further reduce people confidence on the election and democratic processes in the country and reduce their participation level in upcoming elections.
EWA considers start of purposeful electoral reform very productive to consolidating political stability and enhancing public confidence to democracy, asking the government to speed up efforts for launching the electoral reform commission as per people and civil society demands as soon as possible.
Similarly, the relevant commission is required to take into account suggestions of EWA during its work and support the role of civil society during the electoral reform process.
EWA also urges the parliament to bring pressure on government by using its legal jurisdiction in attempt to induce senior authorities to electoral reform through the electoral reform commission.
It once again calls on the government to launch the electoral reforming process timely in order to put an end to the concerns of people, civil society and international community.
