President assesses overall security situation in 24 hours
KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani assessed the overall security situation of the country in the past 24 hours, praising Afghan security forces for their efforts and sacrifices, the Presidential Palace said on Tuesday.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said the president listened to reports presented to him by Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi and Deputy Interior Minister Mohammad Ayub Salangi at the Tawhid Centre during the past 24 hours.
The meeting evaluated the overall security situation of the country and praised as successful recently launched operations by security forces against militants in northern Kunduz province, the statement said.
The statement quoted security officials as saying that the enemy was facing a shameful defeat in Kunduz and suffered huge losses during special operations in Charsada district of western Ghor province.
They said security forces on Tuesday gained control of the Jawand district of Badghis province, calling as effective the role played by Afghan Air Force during the operations in Charsada district.
The security officials recommended that the pilots who took place in the operations in Charsada should be appreciated.
President Ghani praised the quick response from Afghan security and defence forces in advancing the security and defence affairs. He said the pilots, who proved their worth during the operations in Charsada, be introduced for appreciation.
National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar, acting Defence Minister Inayatullah Nazari, spymaster Rahmatullah Nabil and Independent Directorate of Local Governance chief Ghulam Jilani Popal were also in attendance.
After the meeting, the president held talks with acting governors of Nimroz and Helmand provinces and officials of the 215 security zone through a video conference and listened to their reports, the statement said.
The president directed the 215 zone officials to coordinate their efforts for improvement in the security situation of Nimroz and Helmand and retake usurped state properties in Helmand.
He also directed the 215 security zone officials to prevent extortion demands from local traders in Nimroz and provide them security and facilities they needed.
