37kg of narcotics, alcoholic drinks seized in Balkh
MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Police on Monday claimed foiling an attempt to smuggle 37 kilograms of narcotics and alcoholic drinks by arresting two persons in the capital of northern Balkh province.
The two men were detained on Sunday evening in the limits of Mazar-i-Sharif on the Kabul-Balkh highway, the provincial deputy police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Col. Abdul Razaq Qaderi added the drugs and the beverages were recovered from a car bearing a registration number from western Herat province and were destined for Mazar-i-Sharif from Kabul.
He said a third person had been arrested for smuggling alcoholic drinks in a truck a day earlier. He said 132 bottles of alcoholic beverages were recovered from the truck and the detainee had confessed to his crime.
Mazar-i-Sharif residents said they were happy with the seizures and asked police to launch a campaign against smuggling of drugs and alcoholic drinks.
Mohammad Salim, a resident of the third police district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that no one could deny that some people used alcoholic drinks in the city.
He questioned where such drinks were produced and where from they reached the city. “If the drinks are produced here or being smuggled here from outside in both cases the security forces are responsible.”
