AUAF confers honorary degree on Hamid Karzai

May 22, 2015 - 21:53

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): In a graduation ceremony held on Friday at the American University of Afghanistaninfo-icon (AUAF), former Afghan president Hamid Karzai was awarded an honorary doctorate for his service to the educationinfo-icon sector in the country.

The doctorate degree was awarded to Hamid Karzai by the AUAF founder Sharif Fayez and it’s president Mark A. English, a statement from Karzai’s office said.

Karzai said the honorary doctorate was in his name but in reality it belonged to the people of Afghanistan. “Whatever today Afghanistan has in education and higher education sector is thanks to the efforts by the youth and people of this country.”

He said meeting with bright and educated Afghans had given him the feeling that Afghanistan was moving on the path of development.

“When my term as president came to an end, I first used to meet with elders. But afterwards I kept meeting with educated youth and those who have studied in domestic as well as international universities including AUAF,” he remarked, adding that these youth would be a guarantee for a better tomorrow.

He also expressed gratitude to those countries that helped Afghanistan education sector, saying: “our achievements without doubt belong to us, but they wouldn’t have been possible without the support of international community.”

Former president expressed gratitude to the American people for their assistance in improving higher education, healthinfo-icon sector, road construction and economic development.

Karzai said he was in favor of better relations with the US if they were cooperating and proving useful in Afghanistan’s unity and strength.

Quoting former American President John F. Kennedy, Karzai said, “ In one of his historical speeches John F. Kennedy told his people not to ask what America has done to you, but to ask what you have done to America.”

“I’m repeating his words here to the youth of our country not to ask What Afghanistan has done to you, but to ask what you have done to our dear Afghanistan that has so warmly embraced us,” he concluded.
