Stanikzai not a right choice to head MoD: MPs
KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of Meshrano Jirga or upper house of parliament members on Tuesday criticized the nomination of Masoum Stanikzai as the minister-designate for the Ministry of Defense (MoD), saying Stanikzai was not the right choice for the position.
They said that Stanikzai had served in the High Peace Council (HPC) and his selection for war was not a good decision.
Stanikzai who had served as secretary of HPC was introduced two days ago by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani as acting defence minister.
Senator Daud Ghafari in a general session of the house said: “Stanikzai had served in HPC who invited militants to peace, and now he has appointed as the minister of war, so how the militants would trust the government.”
Abdullah Qarlaq, the Meshrano Jirga secretary, said the minister for the MoD should have military experience. Stanikzai had worked in HPC who lacks the profession for the current position, he added.
Qarlaq asked the president to revise his decision about the MoD minister.
Stanikzai completed his primary education at his hometown and was later enrolled in communications institute in Kabul where he completed 14th class majoring in Microwave.
He also studied communications in military university and completed high-level in military field.
Nabia Mustafazada, another lawmaker, said there were many professional people in military who could better lead the ministry of defense instead.
Such kind of government steps would cause people to lose trust on leadership.
Her colleague, Safiullah Hashimi said that government leaders choose individuals of their own interest but the people with good experiences were ignored.
Fazal Hadi Muslimyar, the Meshrano Jirga head, said appointment of individuals was the job of Chief Executive Officer and the president. He said it was up to the lawmakers whether they vote for the new minister-designate.
Another member of the Jirga, Nader Baloch, criticized some of his colleagues for expressing their opposition to Stanikzai and said: “Leave the issues that are against the national interests. It is premature to make any decision.”
He criticized the lawmakers who previously complaining lack of leader for the ministry of defense, while now they were criticizing when the new minister was introduced.
