Police commander among 3 dead in Jawzjan violence
SHIBIRGHAN (Pajhwok): A local policeman and two rebels were killed and six others seriously wounded in two different violence incidents in northwestern Jawzjan province, said an official.
Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani told Pajhwok Afghan News that police commander Sultan Mohammad was instantly killed in a roadside mine blast in Sherbeg village of Qosh- Tapa district on Sunday morning.
Two policemen were wounded in the explosion who were evacuated to a nearby hospital, he added.
Mohammad Ismail, a resident of the locality, said that the two policemen suffered grievous injuries.
But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed claimed the explosion left two policemen dead and three others wounded.
Jawzjan police chief said that Taliban mounted attack on Mahtab police check post in Qosh Tapa district and the ensuing gun battle left two rebels dead and as many wounded.
He said police remained unhurt in the firefight.
Mujahed claimed policemen suffered heavy casualties in the last night assault on police check post but he had no exact details into casualties.
Qosh-Tapa is one of the insecure districts of Jawzjan province and has witnessed severe clashes this year between Taliban and security forces.
