6 illegal gateway exchanges busted in Kunduz

Jun 03, 2015 - 21:39

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Six illegal gateway exchanges were busted and six grey operators detained during a raid in northeastern Kunduz province, an official said on Wednesday.

Provincial Information and Communication Technology director Fazal Rahman Shinwari told Pajhwok Afghan News the mobile phone exchanges had the ability to operate 32 SIM cards at a time and were seized during an operation in Say Darak area of Kunduz city from two houses.

He said four laptop computers, an internet satellite dish antenna, a WiMAX antenna, 670 MTN SIM cards, 500 credit cards of MTN and Roshan companies, GSM internet switches, 190 antennas to run the exchanges and some other relevant equipment were seized.

The operation was launched after the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) traced the location of the networks, he said.

Kunduz governor’s spokesman Abdul Wadood Wahidi said the arrested individuals were residents of Khanabad and Chahardara.

The seized networks would be under investigation of the MICT to find out how long it had been operating in the city and in what activities they had been involved, he said.

Such networks could cost the government and telecommunication companies huge financial losses besides affecting the quality of services, he said. They could disrupt security in the country, he said.
