Afghanistan ready to take on Syria in WC qualifier
KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghanistan is ready to take on Syria in the World Cup qualifier match slated for Thursday in Iran, the game’s body said on Saturday.
The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) said the match between Afghanistan and Syria will be played in Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan province, to determine qualification for FIFA World Cup 2018 to be played in Russia..
Ali Kazmi, AFF spokesperson, told Pajhwok Afghan News hundreds of Afghans waving national flags warmly welcomed their national team upon reaching Mashhad last Thursday.
He said the side had started practice under the watchful eyes of the trainers in a stadium where they would play against Syria. A tough game was expected since the Afghan team had been in good form, Kazmi added.
Prominent Afghan footballers like Islamuddin Amiri and goalkeeper Mansoor Faqiryar and some other players, who did not play against Bangladesh in a friendly match, had joined the practice session, the spokesman added.
Said Hadi, a former football player and analyst, said the match was of great importance as it could earn Afghanistan international fame and was a great achievement as well for Afghanistan.
Thousands of Afghan spectators will be present to watch their team playing against Syria and help boost their morale and their great strength was making the Afghan team a favorite for the game, he said. He said Syria was one of the top 16 Asian football teams.
Beating Laos and ending in a draw against Bangladesh had boosted the confidence of Afghan team and would play with confidence against Syria, he concluded.
