Taliban kidnap deminers near Logar capital
PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Taliban militants on Sunday kidnapped a group of deminers in central Logar province, an official said.
Provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Hakim Ishaqzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place in Daudkhail area of Pul-I-Alam, the provincial capital, this morning.
The men, who worked for the Halo Trust, a British charity that specializes in destroying the debris of war, were traveling in a Kamaz vehicle to field work when came under attack from insurgents, he said. They were kidnapped with their equipment.
The militants tried to abduct more deminers but failed after police engaged them, he said.
Police have launched an operation to rescue the kidnapped workers, he said. There was no information about the exact number of those kidnapped.
A resident of the area, Mohammad Abid, said the rebels and police clashed during the kidnapping drama. But he had no information about casualties.
