Musa Qala clashes kill 17 police, 10 rebels
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Severe clashes between Taliban and Afghan National Police (ANP) have left at least 17 policemen and 10 rebels dead in Musa Qala district of southern Helmand province, a security source said on Saturday.
The official told Pajhwok Afghan News the firefight erupted on Friday night and lasted for hours. Three policemen and many Taliban fighters were also wounded in the clashes, he added.
Taliban have torched three police vehicles, taking two more with them, he said, adding that two of the vehicles were full of weapons.
“The clashes continued for several hours. We didn’t provide with reinforcement. The fighting continued until all our personnel were either left dead or wounded,” the official complained.
Haji Janan, a tribal elder, said fighting continued till late Friday night between insurgents and security forces. Fifteen policemen had been killed and five others were abducted by the Taliban.
Janan warned if no heed was paid to improve security of Musa Qala, the district would fall to Taliban soon. However, militants have not yet commented on the incident.
