Dozens of rebels dead in fresh bout of violence
LASHKARGAH/GARDIZ/ASADABAD (Pajhwok): At least 98 rebels have been killed and 30 others wounded during separate security incidents in southern Helmand, eastern Kunar and southeastern Paktia provinces, officials said Sunday.
Col. Abdul Wadood Najrabi, commander of the 215th Maiwand Military Corps in Helmand, told Pajhwok Afghan News that militants have been fighting security forces in Mulazo and Katozo areas of Sangin district from the past two days.
He said 40 rebels including Pakistanis were killed and 19 others wounded during fierce fight. The bodies of some of the slain rebels were still lying in at the fighting scene.
However, he said that Afghan security forces suffered no casualties.
According to a statement from the 215th Military Corps, four rebels were killed and three others injured during a clearing operation in Musa Kala and Khanshin districts of Helmand.
The statement added that another 30 fighters were killed during an operation in Nawzad district.
Abdul Sattar Noorzai, Helmand police headquarters’ first battalion commander, said insurgents stormed four police posts in Greshk district last night.
Two policemen were also wounded during the clashes, he said.
According to another report, six rebels were killed and nine others wounded during an operation in Gharak area of Ahmadabad district of Paktia province.
Provincial police chief Zalmai Oryakhel confirmed the incident and said the operation was launched by Afghan special forces.
Tarokhail, a resident of Gharak area, said he had seen two Red Crescent ambulances carrying rebels’ corpses. He added the bodies of five Taliban were lying in the area.
On the other hand, some insurgents were killed in foreign forces airstrike in Wataport district of Kunar province.
Kunar police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Sayedkhel said three rebels were killed when an unmanned aircraft targeted them in Qala Qaro area of the district last night.
Taliban did not comment on the incidents so far. But the group in a statement claimed killing three ANA soldiers in Paktia and Helmand provinces during the past 24 hours.
