WJ approves 100% tax on import of tobacco goods
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga (WJ) or lower house of parliament on Monday approved a bill seeking 100 percent tax on importing tobacco goods. Back in 2013, the Wolesi Jirga slashed a ban on smoking indoors.
Inayatullah Babar Farhmand, head of health commission in Wolesi Jirga, presented the bill with amendment in article second of clause 20. The Ministry of Finance received 20 percent tax over tobacco goods and 50 percent increase had been suggested in the bill, he said, adding that commission suggested 100 percent increase instead.
The lawmakers suggested over 100 percent increase on tobacco products since such products were injurious to health. Majority of lawmakers approved the health commission suggestions.
The exact number of cigarette smoker and Huqah has not been confirmed but it is feared the number of the addicted person would be higher than expected in the country.
