Parwan students stage protest to demand vacations
They staged the protest in front of their university in Charikar, the provincial capital, blocking the Parwan-Kabul highway for two hours.
They said they could not continue studies due to hot weather and lack of sufficient food in the hostel.
Second year social sciences student, Mohammad Iqbal, told Pajhwok Afghan News fasting, hot weather and insufficient food interfered with their studies.
He said they should be allowed to go on vacations until the end of Ramadan, a demand, he said, had been rejected by the university authorities, forcing them to stage the demonstration.
A literature student and participant of the rally held similar views. He said the hostel cafeteria served them with beans, okra and beef each for three nights and rice and beans in sehari (pre-dawn meal). There was no fruit on the menu, he added.
But University Chancellor Mohammad Daud Baha said some individuals had incited the protest to create problems on the campus.
He said the students’ demand had been shared with the Ministry of Higher Education, which had said the vacations should not take place until July 10. He said the students were offered food as per the hostel menu.
