15 insurgents dead, a dozen injured in Kunduz fighting
KUNDUZ CITY/ZARANJ/HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): At least 15 militants have been killed and a dozen wounded during clashes in the Chardara and Aliabad districts of northern Kunduz province, an official said on Saturday.
The fighting erupted when militants stormed a security check post of Afghan Local Police (ALP) Commander Aman known as Tarling late on Friday, Governor Spokesman Abdul Wadud Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The fighting, he said between heavily-armed rebels and security forces lasted for hours and ended with the killing of 11 Taliban and eight others. One ALP men sustained wounds during the gun battle.
According to Wahidi, four more insurgents were perished and as many wounded in a similar overnight face-off in the Chardara district.
But Police Spokesman Syed Sarwar Hussaini said five foreigners, including a woman, were eliminated in Afghan forces airstrike in Aliabad district.
He said clearing operation was under way in areas of Chardara in order to purge the district of militants. He added the road leading to the district centre was blocked due to landmines planted by Taliban.
Taliban have not commented on the clashes.
Elsewhere, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) arrested a group of five individuals for their alleged involvement in terrorist attacks in southwestern Nimroz province.
The detainees included Shafiullah, Khairullah and Abdul Bari from Khashrud district and Mullah Abdul Malik and Mullah Abdul Sattar, the residents of Bakwa district in western Farah province, a statement from the spy service said.
It added five terrorist were held from Zaranj, the provincial capital, who were allegedly involved in anti-state activities in two areas of Khashrud district and Masumabad of Zaranj.
Three pistols and a motorcycle were recovered from the detainees. During initial investigations, they confessed to killing of a tribal elder against 20,000 rupees.
In western Herat, police in special operation got released two employees of a private construction company and an Iranian national who were kidnapped by gunmen.
Ghulam Mohammad and Mohammad Naeem, the residents of Herat City, the provincial capital, and employees of Herat-Ghorband Roads Construction Company were kidnapped two day ago, a statement from the police headquarters said.
