ALP needs to be strengthened as a frontline force: CEO

ALP needs to be strengthened as a frontline force: CEO

Jul 06, 2015 - 12:57

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): As a frontline fighting force against terror, the Afghan Local Police (ALP) should be provided with all the needed facilities and support by the Afghan security forces, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah said on Monday.

Last Thursday, heavily-armed insurgents stormed and seized several police check posts and later killed 24 Afghan Local Policemen (ALP) men mercilessly in central Maidan Wardak.

However, officials said security forces regained control of security check posts that overran by insurgents.

Abdullah said that ALP fighters were fighting as a frontline force, which should be provided with all the support primarily by the Afghan National Army (ANA), Afghan National Police (ANP) and other security forces.

He said it seemed that ALP did not get reinforcements despite repeated requests.

After meetings with council of ministers, he observed that ALP had offered resistance as much as they could but reinforcement did not reach them on time. The losses could have been reduced, had ALP got the support from the security forces, he rued.

He said it had been decided in a meeting with National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) that the tragic Jalrez district incident would be taken seriously to avoid happening of such incidents in future.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a meeting also said that the incident would not be overlooked and he ensured it would be seriously investigated.

NDS called it a tragic incident and strongly condemned and appreciated the chivalry and bravery of slain ALP fighters.

Abdullah assured security forces and their families that the sacrifices of the forces would not go waste. The concerned security officials would be asked to explain in details their role regarding the tragic Jalrez incident to council of ministers and would discuss the overall security situation in the country.
