Clashes on, Taliban seize several villages in north
TALOQAN (Pajhwok): Fierce clashes were underway for the last 10 hours between security forces and Taliban militants who captured several areas around the Khwaja Ghar district centre in northern Takhar province, officials said on Monday.
The clashes broke out at 3am last night and continued as of Monday noon, with the insurgents seizing control of Zard Kamar, Chaghtari, Poza Qargha, Dar-ul-Uloom, Goor Tepa and Pool Momin areas, Takhar police spokesman Maj. Abdul Jalil Aseer told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Mohammad Omar, the Khwaja Ghar district chief, said security forces were trying to recapture areas fallen to the militants.
Also last week, insurgents seized several areas of the district, but security forces on Friday announced the captured areas had been cleared of militants.
Shakirullah, a resident of the district, confirmed clashes were ongoing between security forces and militants. “Taliban fighters came closer to the district centre but security forces pushed them back,” he added.
The security situation worsened in the district soon after the Taliban took control of the Dasht-i-Archi district and then marched on the Khwaja Ghar district.
