Ghani attends SCO summit on Thursday
KABUL (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani is scheduled to visit Russia on Thursday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the BRICS summits.
Shakib Mustaghni, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
On the occasion of the SCO summit, Ghani would ask for a full membership status for Afghanistan. The country has an observer status at the SCO.
SCO is a Eurasian political, economic and military organisation which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The MoFA spokesman said the president was also scheduled to attend the BRICS emerging economies summit. BRICS comprise giant emerging economies such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
According to Mustaghni, preparations were also ongoing for the sixth round of regional economic cooperation conference which would be held early October in Kabul.
Representatives of more than 70 countries and international organisations would take part in the conference, discussing regional trade, transport and transit.
