12 rebels, 3 civilians killed in Zurmat attack
GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Twelve attackers and three civilians were killed during a clash with police in the Zurmat district of southeastern Paktia province on Wednesday, an official said.
The militants targeted a police post by a car suicide bombing followed by exchanging of gun fires on Gardez-Zurmat highway on Wednesday afternoon.
Brig. Gen. Zalmai Oryakhel told Pajhwok Afghan News that 12 attackers were killed and 16 others wounded during the firefight that lasted one-and-a-half hours.
He said that three girls of a family were also killed and two wounded when a rocket fired by Taliban hit a civilian house. Four policemen were injured in the attack.
However, a resident of the area Haji Sattar said two women and a child were killed and another wounded when a civilian house was hit by a rocket.
Taliban asserted responsibility for the assault, with the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the police post had been destroyed and a number of policemen killed in the ensuing showdown.
