QALAT/MIAMANA (Pajhwok): At least 16 militants including six suicide bombers and four security personnel have been killed during a clash in Daichopan district in southern Zabul province, an official said Sunday.

Provincial police spokesman Ahmad Fawad Askari told Pajhwok Afghan News that a group of 25 insurgents, including six suicide bombers, stormed police posts in Bailo area of the district late Saturday.

The militants, he said were well-equipped but security forces retaliated boldly, leaving 16 rebels including six suicide bombers, dead in the showdown.

Two Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and two policemen were also killed and three others wounded in the firefight, he added.

However, a security official wishing anonymity said 10 security personnel had suffered casualties in the face-off.

Talibaninfo-icon spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed killing 10 policemen, including police commander Mullahinfo-icon Salam, in the clash. He confirmed losing three fighters.

Local officials on Saturday had said that Afghan special forces have recently launched operations in Daichopan district.

According to another report, an Islamic scholar was killed by Taliban in northwestern Faryab province.

Maulviinfo-icon Mohammad Hassan, the Islamic scholar, was killed by two motorcyclists near his home in Qala-i-Kuhna area of Ghormach district late Saturday, district chief Niamatullah said.

He said that the slain scholar was one of the prominent religious figures in Faryab and Ghorinfo-icon provinces. He accused Taliban of killing Hassan.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for killing Hassan and alleged him of supporting government and was propagating against Taliban.

The 65 years old scholar last year in his speech in Ghormach district ordered Jihadinfo-icon against the Taliban.
