Face-to-face talks with Taliban a big achievement: President

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday hailed face-to-face talks with Talibaninfo-icon in the Pakistani hill resort of Murree as a huge achievement during the last 14 years.

Addressing a crowded press conference late evening in Kabul, Ghani spoke in detail about his recent visit to Russia, where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and his meetings with worldinfo-icon leaders.

"I told leaders at the SCO gathering that terrorists are coming from your countries to Afghanistaninfo-icon and not from Afghanistan to your countries," the president said.

He specifically mentioned the terrorists sneaking from Russia, China and Pakistaninfo-icon into Afghanistan. Lasting peace was the demand of all Afghans, he said, claiming 90 percent of Afghans supported peace talks with Taliban.

Referring to Afghan the performance of the security forces, the president said they were strong enough to defend their homeland and deal with the current threats. However, he underlined steps to strengthen the Afghan air force.

About the presence of Daesh, he said that the terror group was not a challenge only for Afghanistan but for the regional countries as well.
