Senate passes amended draft law on tobacco import tax
The Meshrano Jirga also approved an amended draft law on smoking control law in which 50 percent tax is applied on tobacco imports. Back in 2013, the Wolesi Jirga had slapped a ban on smoking indoors and advertisements of tobacco products.
The Ministry of Finance currently receives 20 percent tax on tobacco goods imported. But the government amended the second article of the tobacco and smoking control draft law and applied 50 percent tax on the products.
Around a month ago, Wolesi Jirga approved tobacco and smoking control law, seeking a 100 percent tax on tobacco imports.
Senate Chairman Abdul Hadi Muslimyar said that applying 100 percent tax on tobacco imports was not in country’s interest. He said 100 percent tax on tobacco would affect the exports of tobacco products to foreign countries.
At the end of the session, majority of senators rejected the Wolesi Jirga’s decision on the draft law and approved amendments to it.
