Floods destroy Badakhshan bridge, cut off 4 towns
KABUL (Pajhwok): Flash floods destroyed a key bridge disconnecting four districts from Faizabad, the capital of northeastern Badakhshan province, a public representative said on Monday.
Ahmad Javed Mujaddedi, a member of the provincial council, told Pajhwok Afghan News the floods emerged two days ago in the Warduj district due to snow-melting on mountains.
Roads leading to Zibak, Ishkashim, Wakhan and Shaghnan remained closed for traffic after a key bridge in the Warduj district was swept away by the floodwaters.
Local officials said the bridge would be rehabilitated soon to restore traffic flow.
Mujaddedi said residents of the four districts faced acute shortage of food and other necessary items and demanded the government work on emergency basis to reopen the roads.
Two pillars of the same bridge were partially damaged with bomb blasts two months ago.
