Afghan forces capture Taliban centres in Faryab
MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Afghan security forces captured two important centers from Taliban militants in the Almar district of northern Faryab province, officials said on Tuesday.
The Almar district chief, Mohammad Saleh Saleh, told Pajhwok Afghan News the two Taliban facilities were captured in the Turbat and Badghis areas of the district during an operation on Monday night.
He said the rebels fled the areas without any resistance and that one of the centres in Turbat area housed a jail where Taliban tortured their captives.
The militants took the prisoners with them when they fled the area, Saleh said, adding that the two areas, where about 800 families lived, had been under the Taliban for the past two years.
A security official, wishing anonymity, said one militant was killed, another wounded and a third arrested with his weapon during the operation.
A week ago, local officials said a military center which the Taliban held for three years was recaptured by security forces.
The Taliban have not yet commented about the operation.
