Flooding causes heavy financial losses in Kunar

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): A recent flood damaged agricultural lands and destroyed crops, causing heavy financial losses in eastern Kunar province, an official has said on Thursday.

 Ghulam Ali Sabat, the director of natural disaster management authority, told Pajhwok Afghan News the flooding had damaged farmlands in Narai, Chapa Dara, Sarkano, Khas Kunar, Narung, Ghaziabad, Asmar, Shigal and Watapur districts.

The flooding damaged 66 houses, 512 acres of farmlands and crops in addition to 18 small electricity dams, Sabat said three bridges, three mosques, 69 irrigation dams, two drinking water projects, 39 orchards and two kilometre irrigation channels were also damaged.

A nine-year-old girl was killed in Chappa district, Sabat said. At least 47 affected families have been assisted by different organizations so far.

Qazi Mohammad Nabi Ahmadi, the deputy governor of Kunar, said that he had requested the central government for further support for the affected households. 

Zewar Shah, a resident of Pashad Kali, said the flood had ruined his house and agricultural land and his family had to brave problems. He urged the government to provide emergency support and shelter for the affected families.
