Afghanistan trounce Oman for 5th spot in thriller

Jul 25, 2015 - 20:16

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon on Saturday trounced Oman by five wickets in a low-scoring thriller at the Clontarf Cricket Club Ground in Dublin, the cricket board said.

Both teams have already qualified for the ICC Worldinfo-icon T20 Cup 2016 to be played in India and hence the academic nature of the result.

Afghanistan chose to ball after winning the toss and restricted Oman to 127 for 8 in the stipulated 20 overs, the ACB spokesman said in a statement.

Zeeshan Maqsood, who shone for his side in several matches of the tournament, fell in the first over, bowled by Dawlat Zadran, the right-arm medium pacer.

Mirwais Ashraf and Aftab Alam bagged two wickets each to keep in check the opposition that had earlier stunned Afghanistan by 40 runs in a Group-B clash in Edinburgh.

Afghanistan reached the target in 19th over with Najibullah Zadran scoring 44 runs, Samiullah Shinwari 40 and former captain Mohammad Nabi 27.

Shinwari smashed a boundary to finish the game, with seven deliveries to go. The outcome saw Afghanistan emerge fifth in the 14-nation series. Oman secured the last sixth place.

Najibullah Zadran won the man of the match award. By the virtue of the victory, Afghanistan have finished fifth in the event.
