Civilians, security personnel among 27 dead in Kunar violence
KABUL (Pajhwok): Fourteen militants, seven civilians and six security personnel were killed and several others including women wounded when dozens of insurgents stormed security posts in the Marawara district in eastern Kunar province, an official says on Tuesday.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Syedkhail, provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News more than 400 armed insurgents mounted coordinated attacks on security check-posts at 5:00 am, but security forces repulsed the assault. The gunbattle lasted till evening, he added.
As many as 14 armed insurgents, seven civilians and six Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed and 17 other militants and several civilians including four women wounded in the firefight, he said.
The district is situated three kilometers east of Asadabad, the provincial capital.
Hazrat Bilal, a resident of Asadabad, said fear gripped the area and most of the people restricted to their homes.
