Nawzad district of Helmand falls to Taliban
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The Nawzad district of southern Helmand province on Wednesday fell to Taliban following an firefight lasting several hours, a security official confirmed.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confided to Pajhwok Afghan News the district changed hands after intense clashes in the afternoon.
He said security forces had been pushed back to the southern part of the district and currently heavy fighting was underway in Anogina locality. The militants also captured weapons and tanks from security forces.
Hashim Alokozai, a member of the Mesharano Jirga from Helmand, said he was in contact with security officials and had asked them to dispatch reinforcements to Nawzad to keep it from falling.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said after two days of fighting, the fighters captured the district centre and other areas this afternoon. Nawzad is situated 170 kilometres north of Lashkargah, the provincial capital, and government forces control one-fourth part of areas.
