Taliban say unaware of 2nd round of peace negotiations

Taliban say unaware of 2nd round of peace negotiations

Jul 30, 2015 - 11:32

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A day after their leader's reported death, the Talibaninfo-icon said on Thursday they have not been informed about the second round of peace talks scheduled for Friday in Pakistaninfo-icon.

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesperson, said: “Media circulate reports that talks will take place very soon ... either inside the country, in China or Pakistan.”

The Taliban political office in Qatar had complete authority to be part of the political process but it was unaware of such a development, he said in a statement.

Taliban had a political office which dealt with political affairs and the group had reiterated this stance time and again, he said after Pakistan and Afghanistaninfo-icon officials confirmed the second round of peace talks would be held on Friday in Islamabad.

The first round of peace of direct negotiations was held in the tourist resort of Murree last month, with China and US attending the groundbreaking meeting as observers.

Haji Din Mohammad, a member of Afghan delegation, said in an interview that Taliban had assured them the second round of talks would take place after the Eid festival.

But the Taliban expressed their unawareness about the second round while the rumors about the death of their supreme commanders circulated in media since Wednesday.
