Electoral reform panel working efficiently: UN
KABUL (Pajhwok): The UN deputy special representative for Afghanistan said on Saturday the reform commission had started well, efficiently and with full support of the two leaders of the national unity government.
A statement from the United Nation Assistance Mission (UNAMA) quoted Tadamichi Yamamoto as saying the process had been completely Afghan-led, Afghan-owned, with all Afghan initiatives, as should be reflecting the sovereignty of the country.
“The process, as you have seen, is very inclusive, very intensive and very efficient. The work is being conducted with all the necessary elements which are required for a modern democratic system,” Yamamoto added.
The process has just started, Yamamoto said, adding that “..I am very confident that with these competent members and with the strong support of the national unity government and with the help of all the stakeholders in this country who will give us their views and opinions, there cannot be anything but improvement.”
Yamamoto said that the United Nations would provide all its possible technical support based on its experience and its knowledge and its expertise. “I also know for a fact that the international community is committed to assisting in improving and strengthening the democratic process of this country including the electoral process.”
