Militants torch relief goods for poor in Helmand
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Armed gunmen have burnt relief items of Red Crescent (RC) for vulnerable in the Kajaki district in southern Helmand, an official said on Sunday.
The district officials reported recently that Taliban had blocked the main road and people and security forces confronted shortage of food items.
Mullah Abdul Razzaq, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that RC had transported edible items for 70 families which Taliban had set on fire on Saturday night.
“Taliban fighters have burnt the edible items in area where there were vulnerable and deserved families,” he said, adding that rebels had only burnt the items and had not damaged the vehicles.
Haji Naik Mohammad, head of the local community, said the assistance was for 240 families. “It was planned and decided that the aid would be distributed among families living in area under Taliban control while some would be distributed in nearby areas, had the aid reached to area,” he added.
RC office in the province also confirmed aid of 71 families had been burnt in the district but had not mentioned the name of any group. According to RC officials, RC had completed survey and found at least 300 vulnerable families that needed assistance.
