People can help curb poppy cultivation, says Naeemi

Aug 03, 2015 - 20:14

MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): The governor on Monday urged local residents to help the government prevent the cultivation of the illicit poppy crop in eastern Laghman province.

Abdul Jabbar Naeemi made the appeal at a gathering in Mehtarlam, the provincial capital, where provincial officials, a large number of tribal elders, religious scholars and farmers were present.

The governor thanked farmers for abandoning poppy cultivation and growing food crops, particularly vegetables. Naeemi urged them to cooperate with the government campaign against narcotics by preventing the cultivation of poppy.

Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon member from Laghman Naqibullah Mohabbat called upon those farmers who cultivated poppy on their fields to show mercy to their children and abandon sowing the banned crop.

He urged the governor to make efforts at countering drug smuggling, sale and import in Laghman besides preventing poppy cultivation.

Speaking on behalf of religious scholars, Maulviinfo-icon Mohammad Younas Shamakhel said Islam prohibited the use of all types of narcotics. He said they were ready to spread knowledge about the hazards of drugs in light of Islamic teachings

Tribal elder Mohammad Masal told Pajhwok Afghan News that they were ready to cooperate with the government in doing away with the poppies, but in return, he said, the government should extend farmers assistance they needed.
