Contract signed to reconstruct Herat-Islam Qala road
KABUL (Pajhwok): A 20-kilometre portion of the road between Herat City, the capital of western Herat province, and Islam Qala, a town near the Iranian border, would be reconstructed at a cost of $10 million, officials said on Tuesday.
A contract in this regard was signed between the Ministry of Public Works and a private construction company, “Unique Builders” on Tuesday.
Public Works Minister Mahmood Balish said at the contract signing ceremony that the project would be completed in 18 months.
He said the road was part of a 45-kilometre ring road that connected Herat, Islam Qala and Kandahar province.
The minister said reconstruction costs of the entire ring road were estimated at $32 million, which would be provided by the Italian government.
He said Italy and some other friendly countries had promised funding reconstruction of 132-kilometre portion of the road from Onai tunnel in Central Maidan Wardak province till Bamyan province.
Italian Ambassador Luciano Pezzotti, who was present on the occasion, said his country would continue assisting with the Afghan Public Works Ministry for a prosperous Afghanistan.
