Wheat crops up in Samangan this year
AIBAK (Pajhwok): Wheat production has increased in northern Samangan province this year and can meet demand of the province, an official said Wednesday.
Provincial agriculture director Noor Mohammad told Pajhwok Afghan News that 110,000 hectares of land was cultivated with wheat this year which produced 102,000 tons of crops, registering 10 percent increase compared to last year.
He linked the hike in the crop to on time rain and elimination of damaging grasshoppers.
Mohammad said that Samangan province was this year self-sufficient in wheat and its residents did not need to import the crop.
Farmers were also expressed satisfaction about increase in the wheat crops.
Abdul Mohammad, a farmer from Sher Kayar village of Aibak, the provincial capital said that he collected more than two tons of wheat from rain fed farmland.
Another farmer Toi Mohammad of Aibak city said he had cultivated 19 cares of land and collected 2.1 tons of wheat.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture domestic wheat production meets 80 percent of need of the residents.
