Turkmen president in Kabul for security, economic cooperation talks
An official wishing to go unnamed told Pajhwok Afghan News President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow would meet his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah and other officials.
He said Berdimuhamedow’s visit was aimed at discussing economic, political, transit and business issues with Afghan officials. The threat from the Islamic State (IS) to the region will also figure at the talks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Berdimuhamedow’s visit to Kabul important and said Afghanistan and Turkmenistan would also sign cooperation agreements in different areas, particularly in the energy sector.
After the ouster of the Taliban regime, relations between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have entered a new phase. Former president Hamid Karzai and other officials had visited the neighboring country several times and signed a number of agreements with Turkmenistan.
After the National Unity Government came into being, this is the first visit of a senior Turkmenistan official to Kabul.
