1600kg of drugs found in Kabul-bound truck

Aug 29, 2015 - 17:55

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Police recovered narcotics weighing 1600 kilograms from a truck during a search in the capital of central Logar province on Saturday.

Logar crime branch police chief Col. Mohammad Jan Abid told Pajhwok Afghan News the drugs (hashish) were destined for Kabulinfo-icon from Azra district. He said the substance had been hidden in sand on the truck.

Police had arrested the truck’s driver who was currently being questioned, the official said, adding that drugs from eastern provinces were being brought to Azra district and from there smuggled to other provinces.

Abid said since the start of the current solar yearinfo-icon (March 22), thousands of kilograms of drugs had been seized on six such occasions.

The police official also said they recovered a suicide vest on Saturday morning from Wazir Qala area of Pul-i-Alam.

“We had prior information about the presence of a suicide attacker whose target was the Kabul Bank branch in Pul-i-Alam. When we reached the area, the would-be attacker had fled, but we found his suicide vest.”

Logar is among Afghanistaninfo-icon’s volatile provinces. Talibaninfo-icon militants have active presence in various districts of the province. The rebels have closed the road between Azra district and Pul-i-Alam over the past several years.
