Reform panel submits suggestions to govt

Aug 30, 2015 - 18:10

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah on Sunday welcomed the Electoral Reform Commission’s suggestions, saying the government was committed to respecting the panel’s decisions.

Abdullah expressed these views following a meeting with the reform commission’s members at Sapidar Palace.

Shah Sultan Akefi, the panel’s head, said they put all their efforts to formulate the set of suggestions aimed at regaining the eroded trust over election bodies and paving the way for transparent future elections.

Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN deputy special representative and member of the reform commission, hoped the government and the international community would agree on implementation of the suggestions.

“We expect the suggestions will restore people’s trust in the election commissions. The UN is expecting the reforms process to start soon.”

Abdullah Abdullah expressed gratitude to the reform commission’s members for their month-long efforts in preparing the suggestions. “You have done a comprehensive work and I’m thankful to each one of you. It’s a good example of our commitments for professional work and responsibility towards a major national duty.”

The CEO said members of the panel had travelled extensively to provinces and had collected suggestions and views from both domestic as well as international organistaions.

“I promise that all the suggestions would have our support and attention,” he said, adding that all the 11 articles of the suggestions had their importance.
