NATO airstrike kills foreign rebel leader in Kunar
ASADABAD (Pajhwok): A NATO airstrike killed a foreign militant commander on Tuesday morning in eastern Kunar province, where a clash left 22 Taliban insurgents dead and 26 others wounded, an official and the military said.
Zarqawi was killed along with an accomplice in Sawki Dara of Ghaziabad district, the governor’s spokesman, Ghani Musammam, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Meanwhile, the 201 Selab Military Corps in a statement said an insurgent attack involving about 400 militants had been repulsed in the Nari district.
The group attack took place on Monday morning when the large number of militants stormed security posts in the district, the statement said.
Backed by air support, the security forces retaliated, killing 22 attackers and injuring 26 others, the statement said, confirming the death of one soldier and injuries to another.
The Taliban have said nothing about the killing of commander Zarqawi, but they claimed killing and wounding a number of security personnel during yesterday’s attack in the Nari district.
