10 social media activists to receive awards

10 social media activists to receive awards

Sep 10, 2015 - 20:14

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Impassion Afghanistaninfo-icon -- Afghanistan’s first digital media agency -- on Thursday announced awards for 10 innovative users of social media in the country after a certain evaluation process.

Ahmad Shuja, founding partner of the agency, told journalists in Kabul the aim of this year’s “Afghan Social Media Awards (ASMA)” was to inspire and teach individual and organizational social media users to expand their ideas about how they use social media.

The first ASMA is organised as part of the third annual Afghan Social Media Summit slated for October 20. The public nomination and voting period opened on Thursday and would continue till October 1, Shuja added.

According to Shuja, any social media user who wished to be nominated for the categories should visit page and register online.

The 10 categories for which the awards will be given are: Twitter Power User, Best Instagrammer, Best Blogger, Youtube Star, Facebook Star, Citizen Journalist of the Year, Best Social Media Advertising Campaign, Best Use of Social Media for Civic Engagement, Best Use of Social Media for Journalism and Best Use of Social Media to Inspire Offline Action.

Shuja said the ASMA would be judged by a panel of both international and Afghan experts in technology, the internet and social media. Each jury member would be responsible for evaluating 3-4 categories.

He said the winners would be announced during the third Annual Social Media Summit that would be held from 18 – 20 October in Kabul.

At the summit, he added, the participants would share their experiences regarding social media.

Jean Mackenzi, editor at Paiwandgah News and a member of the jury, said social media was the best hope for bringing positive changes to Afghanistan.

She said social media would bring many changes to Afghanistan and developments in this regard had been inspiring.

“When I came to Afghanistan in 2004 everyone was asking me whether I was married and how many kids did I have, but last October when I came they were asking me whether I had Facebook and twitter account.”

It is pertinent to mention that Pajhwok Afghan News, Shamshad TV, Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the US Embassy in Kabul are partners of the event.
