Taliban partially capture Raghestan district of Badakhshan
FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Officials in northeastern Badakhshan province on Friday said hundreds of Taliban fighters have gained control of half of Raghestan district as a result of fierce attacks.
Col. Sakhi Dad Haidari, the deputy police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the predawn attacks took place at 3:00am. Heavy fighting is still ongoing between security forces and the insurgents.
Haidari said more than eight Taliban fighters had been killed so far and two Afghan security wounded.Back-up forces had been sent to the remote district to repel the attacks, he added.
The Taliban have yet to comment on the offensive. According to local officials, most of the fighters have come from Pakistan’s tribal areas to establish bases for themselves in different parts of the province.
