Operation begins to secure Kabul-Jalalabad highway
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): An operation codenamed Khanjar-II has been launched to securethe busy Kabul-Jalalabad highway, an official said on Tuesday.
The 201st Selab Military Corps in the eastern zone said in a statement the operation was launched in the Wresham Tangi and Mahipar areas east of Kabul on Monday.
It added 201st Military Corps forces, Afghan National Police (ANP) and National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel are conducting the operation.
Four villages -- Goga Mandi, Khundi, Dagari and Shpoli - between Mahipar and Sarobi districts were cleared of rebels on the first day of the offensive.
Militants have recently stepped up attacks on Afghan forces the Kabul-Jalalabad highway.Some passengers kidnapped on the road were released after ransom payments.
A resident of Laghman province, Samsor who works in Kabul, said he did not feel secure traveling the highway. “Most of the people have shifted their houses to Kabul due to serious threats.”
Imranullah, who belongs to the Behsud district of Nangarhar province and work for the Ministry of Public Health, voiced his concern at increasinginsecurity on the highway.
