Measures taken to prevent ozone depletion: Official
The ozone layer or ozone shield refers to a region of Earth's stratosphere that absorbs most of the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It contains high concentrations of ozone (O3) relative to other parts of the atmosphere, although still very small relative to other gases in the stratosphere.
World Ozone Day was celebrated in Kabul at a gathering under the title “ozone, the only thing between you and Ultra Violet Rays.
Speaking on the occasion, National Environment Protection Agency (NEPA)’s deputy director Ghulam Mohammad Malakyar said Afghanistan had taken a big step to prevent ozone depletion.
He said they had established an office for ozone to ban the use of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) in refrigerators and air-conditioners because the gas destroyed the layer and replaced it with hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which contained hydrogen and was comparatively less hazardous for the layer. He said the HCFC use would also be ended by 2040.
Malakyar said 843 employees of customs departments were trained this year to prevent the import of such gases and 15 machines for identifying the gas had been given to them.
He said they also trained 380 fridge and air conditioners professionals and issued them 117 machines for the collection of the gas to them to use it in their workshops.
