Revival of Afghan peace process possible, says Aziz

Revival of Afghan peace process possible, says Aziz

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Efforts are ongoing for the resumption of reconciliation talks between the Talibaninfo-icon and the government in Kabulinfo-icon, a senior Pakistani diplomat has said.

Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, briefing the Senate in Islamabad on Tuesday, suggested the process could be revived if Kabul desired.

He vehemently spurned reports that Taliban’s supreme leader Mullahinfo-icon Omar had died in Pakistaninfo-icon. “His son Mullah Yaqub himself has confirmed his father never left Afghanistaninfo-icon.”

Aziz said the news regarding Omar’s death was first released in Kabul on July 29 before the second round of peace talks. Later, his demise was confirmed by the President Palace in Kabul.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed last week to end a dangerous blame game over a recent string of attacks in Kabul. They vowed to work together to overcome the trust deficit.

“The main thing that we both agreed upon was to restore trust, end the blame game and create a positive atmosphere,” Aziz said about his meeting with President Ashraf Ghani.
