Efforts for peace & saving gains to go together: VP
KABUL (Pajhwok): First Vice-President Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum has said efforts to achieve peace and preserve gains made over the past 13 years would go to together.
In his Eid message, Dostum said the Afghans had not only lost many lives during the 40-year-old conflict but they suffered huge economic losses as well.
Thus, he said, an end to the war and insecurity was Afghans’ desire and without negotiations and talks with insurgents, there was no other way to achieve this goal.
“We assure our people that we will try with all our strength to bring peace and security to the country. Our efforts for reaching peace would be through negotiations, but our efforts for defending the country and securing our achievements of the last 13 years would also continue.”
Dostum’s statement coincides with first Eid message from Taliban’s new supreme leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour, who asked the Afghan government to cancel all treaties with the US and expel foreign troops from Afghanistan if it wants peace.
Gen. Dostum in his message also voiced concern about the migration of youth to other countries, saying that wasn’t the solution to the current problems Afghanistan faced.
He urged the youth, especially the educated ones, to stand against challenges, work hard, bring peace and security and get their country out of this situation.
