Afghan athletes win 15 medals in Iran, US

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan karate and power-lifting teams have won seven gold, three silver and five bronze medals in Iran and the United States.

The karate team secured third position by winning five gold medals, one silver and five bronze in the Persian Karate Championship in Iran, according to a statement from the Department of Physical Training and Sportsinfo-icon.

Besides athletes who traveled to Iran from Afghanistaninfo-icon, a number of Afghan refugees living in the neighbouring country also took part in the event.

Iran secured first position and Azerbaijan finished second in the championship.

Separately, the statement said Afghan power-lifting team won two gold and two silver medals in an international event in the United States.

Ali Reza Rafizada, a heavyweight champion, got the best lifter title in the event.

Also a six-member Afghan karate team left for Russia on Tuesday to participate in the Worldinfo-icon Kio Kushin Karate Championship. The Afghan group included three athletes, a coach, a referee and a delegation.

The championship kicked off Tuesday (September 29) in Khabarovsk city of Russia.
