5 new polio cases detected in Nangarhar

Oct 04, 2015 - 16:05

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Five new polio cases have emerged in the Shinwari Zone and Sherzad districts of eastern Nangarhar province, the provincial public healthinfo-icon director said on Sunday.

Najibullah Kamawal was talking at a ceremony marking the launch of a three-day vaccination drive targeting 627,000 children.

“Due to insecurity in Achin, Deh Bala and Kot districts, it would be difficult to administer polio drops to 40,000 children in these areas,” said Kamawal.

Governor Salim Khan Kunduzi, who inaugurated the three-day campaign by giving polio drop to children, said people in insecure areas should vaccinate their children to secure them from being paralysed by the dangerous virus.

Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon remain the only two countries where polio could not be eliminated. A few days ago, the Worldinfo-icon Health Organisation (WHO) announced that African country Nigeria had become polio-free.

The new polio cases in Afghanistan were detected after Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah met philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.

Gates insisted the Afghan government should intensify its campaign against the deadly virus and assured every kind of assistance and cooperation on his part.
