EU pledges €2m in assistance for Afghan IDPs

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The European Union (EU) on Sunday pledged €2 million in aid for construction of retaining walls and canalization in camps housing Internally Displace Persons (IDPs) in Kabul.

To the effect, an agreement was signed between UN-HABITAT and Kabul Municipality officials here.

Mohammad Yasin Hilal, deputy director of policy and coordination at the municipality, said the money would be spent on construction of canals and retaining walls at IDP camps situated near rivers and improper places.

Mohammad Aslam Akrami, deputy director finance, said the money would help extend government services to IDPs living inside and outside of camps.

He said IDPs living in the 13th municipal district would benefit the most as their streets and footpaths inside camps would be constructed.

He said the reconstructioninfo-icon works would improve the living condition of the refugees and they would be able to live a comfortable life.

Hiroshi Takahash, UN-HABITAT acting country director, said it was a good programme to facilitate refugees, adding that President Ashraf Ghani should give priority to this project.

According to the Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation (MoRR), as many as 45,000 people displaced by the conflict, poverty, insecurity and drought, having been living in camps near Kabul under difficult conditions.
