Minister vows to keep highways open in winter
KABUL (Pajhwok): Public Works Minister Mahmood Baligh on Sunday said preparations had been competed in advance to keep all major highways open during winter.
The minister said this year they were more cautious about problems people faced during winter seasons and thus the authorities concerned had been tasked with full preparations to avoid highway blockades due to snowing.
He said roads in 23 provinces would face the threat of being blocked by heavy snowfall, avalanches, storms and rains, but his ministry had tasked its officials preventing long-hours wait by passengers for road clearance.
According to the minister, contracts would be signed with private companies and residents of snow-bound highways for swift reopening of highways if blocked and the government would pay the costs.
