Samangan HPC head resigns citing old age
AIBAK (Pajhwok): The High Peace Council (HPC) head for northern Samangan province has resigned and has been replaced by a member of the committee.
Mohammad Dawood Jalali, Samangan HPC secretary, told Pajhwok Afghan News Maulvi Khair Mohammad Sultani, 70, who had been heading the council over the past four years, resigned due to his old age.
Given the sensitive security situation in the country, he said, the Samangan HPC accepted his resignation and replaced him by Faqir Mohammad Khanzada as the acting head.
He said during the past four years, around hundred insurgents had joined the peace process in Samangan.
Some residents, however, did not approve the council’s work in the past few years, saying the body’s chief resigned under pressure from insurgents.
Mohammad Amin, a resident of Dasht-i-Mazar in Aibak city, said some years back, there had been no insurgent activities in the province, but the security situation deteriorated in the past one year. He claimed Khair Mohammad resigned under pressure from insurgents and some circles in the province.
An official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the PHC provincial head had resigned under pressure, but did not elaborate.
Meanwhile, Maulvi Khair Mohammad Sultani admitted he was under pressure from insurgents and some circles in the province. Apart from these pressures, he said, his advanced age was a major reason for his resignation.
